Wisemans Ferry is about 32 km north of our Rouse Hill base as the crow flies, where the Hawkesbury meets the Macdonald River. The town grew around Solomon Wiseman's ferry, started in 1827 to supply convicts building the Great North Road, and the crossing has been on the same spot since 1829. At the 2021 Census 233 people lived here, with a median age of 50.
Old Northern Road winds down to the river past rock embankments, and Transport for NSW notes parts of it have no road shoulders. In early 2024 it replaced the asphalt from River Road to the tennis courts entrance and stabilised the rock wall in two places near 5400 Old Northern Road. Fresh seal and loose rock both throw stones. Then there are the ferry queues: the main ferry takes 24 cars, and on weekends a second boat runs, so vehicles stack up close together on the approach.
This is a trade town. Technicians and trades workers made up 26.8% of employed residents at the Census, more than double the NSW rate of 11.9%. Accommodation and boatbuilding and repair were the top two industries, which makes sense on a river full of holiday traffic. Almost a third of homes had three or more vehicles, so there is often a tow car or work ute in the driveway.
