Maroota is about 24.8 km north of our Rouse Hill base as the crow flies, up on the ridge that Old Northern Road follows, around 200 metres above sea level. Under the paddocks sits the Maroota Sand, an ancient river deposit, and that sand has shaped the place. At the 2021 Census 616 people lived here, with a median age of 41, and 98.3% of homes were separate houses.
This is quarry country. Council's Rural Strategy notes that Maroota's extractive industries supply sand for building and landscaping, and the Haerses Road Quarry alone covers about 128 hectares. In July 2021 its approval was changed to allow 180 truck movements a day, up from 56. A proposed friable sandstone project would add another 500,000 tonnes a year, all going out by road. Those trucks share Old Northern Road and Wisemans Ferry Road with you, and Transport for NSW says parts of both are winding with no shoulders.
People here work with their hands and the land. At the Census 19.6% of employed residents were technicians and trades workers, 12.8% labourers and 8.4% machinery operators and drivers. Outdoor vegetable growing was the top industry at 7.8%, ahead of site preparation and nursery production. Nearly half of homes (47.6%) had three or more vehicles, so we fit farm utes, tippers and tractors as well as the family car.
